Seeking Inclusion in Empty Spaces.
Exclusionary Integration.
By Camille
Through the harrowing days and times of longing for empty faces to create spaces, there are moments that pass like fleeting whispers, and the only thing left is that feeling of longing, that desire for connection. Through practices to try to do better, and work on keeping a safe space for others, one may forget to keep a safe space for themselves, and while fighting for inclusion and integration of the varying bodies of the world, you may seemingly exclude your own body.
There is a facade within the realm of inclusion that while the thought is to include all persons, every body, regardless, it seemingly leaves out and continues to marginalize marginalized individuals and excludes in practice. This facade of inclusion conceals the underlying systems and/or attitudes of discrimination or prejudice. The paradoxical nature of situations where appearance or integration masks deeper issues of exclusion and inequality.
This is an inclusion illusion, something I will cover more later in another blog. But this idea of grandeur only creates harm in the long run as it treads on and leaves the marginalized in the dust. There is a prioritization in success and progress, but considering inclusion illusions it only leads to complacency and the belief that systemic issues have been adequately addressed when in reality they continue to persist in various forms. Moreover, the illusion of inclusion can breed resentment and distrust among marginalized groups, eroding social cohesion and exacerbating divisions within society.
Seeking inclusion in empty spaces in the pursuit of baseless sufficiency that never actually addressed the underlying issues that continue to perpetuate exclusion is inclusion illusions. Seeking inclusion in empty spaces is the act of masking exclusion in spaces meant for all bodies. Thus erasing diverse experiences and identities, further marginalizing individuals who do not fit within the straight and narrow definitions of acceptability.
Power dynamics within the pursuit of inclusion is an important factor. Often, those draped in privilege unwittingly orchestrate the cadence of inclusivity, relegating the melodies of oft-overlooked voices to the margins. This discord not only solidifies the complexities of power but also perpetuates the symphony of systemic inequalities. True inclusivity demands a shift of power's essence, a symphony where marginalized voices find not just resonance but a place at the pulpit. By harmonizing these discordant notes, society strides closer to authentic inclusivity, where every soul finds solace in the development of respect, and systemic barriers to equality gently fade into silence.
Let us sculpt a tapestry of inclusion, where each thread is woven from the diverse voices of our communities, intertwining in harmony to create a mosaic of belonging, and as we reflect on the complexities of seeking inclusion in empty spaces and the consequences of the illusion of inclusion, consider the following: How might we cultivate spaces that genuinely embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion, rather than perpetuating harmful illusions of progress?
