Queer Dimensional: Making way for the Queer in Christianity

A Queer dimensional Christianity?

By Camille

The term "Queer", in a more  general definition, means to challenge heteronormativity. But it has a history as being a pejorative term used against LGBT+ individuals. The reclamation of the term in the late 20th century has been used to embrace non-normative identity classification, but this blog post is going to focus more on answering how can Christianity be Queer.

The simple answer to that is that by adjusting your perspective on Christianity to affirm LGBT+ individuals existence, then that is how you make way for the Queer in Christianity. You don't do so solely because that is your ticket into heaven or because you are trying to be Godly. You do so because it makes sense, you do so because someone being Queer should not be a hurdle or jumping block between your beliefs and what is the most Godly thing to do so that you see the Lord in the afterlife. You do so because prejudice is evil and you know that it is important to uphold principles of love, acceptance, and inclusion, which are central to Christian teachings.

Embracing Queer Christians means that you recognize their importance, their worth, and dignity as LGBT+ children beloved by God, because why say that God is Love, God is life, if you are going to cherry pick who receives that divine rhetoric. Making way for the Queer in Christianity means challenging and dismantling the harmful beliefs and practices that have led  to the exclusion and marginalization of LGBT+ individuals within Christian spaces and communities.

The diversity of human sexuality and gender identity have been created in Gods image, they are a part of Gods creative design. Upholding a Christianity that affirms Queer identity continues to uphold the sole meanings that it preaches about. Equality for all people means equality for the LGBT+ community, it means Justice for Nex Benedict, Justice for Serena Angelique Velazquez Ramos, a trans Latina killed in Puerto Rico because of prejudice. Too often trans and gender non conforming individuals are victims of transphobia, racism, and misogyny. Justice means changing the justice system that continues to oppress marginalized individuals while setting the perpetrators free or giving them a slap on the wrist.

Making way for the Queer in Christianity means truthfully embracing a theology of love and acceptance, a theology of justice and equality, a theology of inclusion and celebration, of humanity and dignity. Creating spaces where all are welcome and valued regardless of sexuality, race, ethnicity, gender, and religion or background.

Queer Christianity will always challenge Christians to live their faith authentically by actively working on dismantling oppressive systems.

Thank you for reading. And remember that Christianity can be queer dimensional.

Terms- "Queer Dimensional" a word camille came up with to mean envisioning a realm where the spectrum of possibility expands infinitely, inviting all to explore the vibrant human experience without constraints.
